Nowadays, sustainability, environmental awareness and also green energy have become a priority for more and more companies, and as part of this, they pay special attention to the source of the energy they consume. In this context, the guarantees of origin have become an effective tool for businesses to reduce their ecological footprint by allowing them to cover their electricity consumption from environmentally friendly sources.
A guarantee of Origin (GO) is therefore an electronic document that transparently and objectively certifies that the electricity purchased comes from a renewable or emission-free production source. Such a certificate contains a great amount of information about the generation unit of the energy, that lets the users or electricity-using companies to choose the GOs that is convenient to them based on their preferences (for example, certifying electricity produced exclusively from solar, wind or hydroelectric energy source).
Renewable energy power plants (solar, wind, hydro or even biogas) can register 1 guarantee of origin for every 1 MWh of electricity produced, which can then be sold by authorised traders at auctions or on the OTC markets.
